The Servant King is God, Who Patiently Cares for His People – Mark 6:45-56
(Mark 6:45-56 ESV)- see john 6, matt 14,
Ie. Liju, thx jomin & congrats stabin/leena
sitting here today-prob weighing you down, crushing you? exhausted?
Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
‘immediately’- Unmistakable urgency, why did JC get rid of disciples so he can dismiss crowd himself?
-strange bc disciples could minister triumphantly right after miracle of 10k?
PR- so we can learn in our own brokenness/weakness how to depend on All sufficient Savior
-Disciples, after being promised rest away from ppl, now apparently reluctant to leave crowd adulation & JC had to force them (ie. Little kid still want to play) & JC had to shove the boat away
And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
JC prays only 3x in Mark but each time at night, lonely place, facing crisis
Prays for renewed calling to be servant king not political freedom fighter
-even JC only safe on his knees
jOHN 6: When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
(John 6:14-15 ESV)
– JC want to avoid revolution
-perhaps also praying for his disciples, who are in dangerous spiritual condition, that their faith would not fail
And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them,
-Funny: disciples strenously rowing, JC walks after them & catches up, sharp 90 turn turns parallel as if to pass them so they could recognize him
I. Jesus is GOD.
Just as Jesus did not first feed the hungry multitudes but taught them in the miracle of loaves/fishes (6:34), here, he does not first rescue the disciples from their problem but tries to teach them something by passing by them.
*ANSWER to disciples earlier Q in favorite sermon of Jiju in Mark 4:41, ‘who is this?’
DIFF from mark 4 is this is not a rescue at sea bc disciples are frustrated but not in danger- JC wants to help disciples see something in their difficulty – he wills for them to see his transcendent majesty as a divine being and to give them reassurance.
“pass by” = ? but Ex 33- Lord passed by Moses to reveal himself, (ex 33:21-23- Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”)
OT references- 1 kgs 19:11, job 9
Ex- parting red sea,Creator God separating waters to create heaven & land
NOT just some magic trick, but revealing who He is- the one true God Himself coming to save, glimpse of His divinity to help them discover who He is (v. not understanding re loaves)
But diff from OT revelation, Jesus tries to make mysterious God of Job visible for 1st time
this incarnation Indescribable
-shows he is God
God cannot be fully seen, but Jesus CAN!
NOT just a succssor to Moses, providing manna in desert
disciples see more than God’s back, but see face of God thru His son
Further proof: JC didn’t just say hi, but “I am” (disciples oblivious)
“It is I” = what God said to Moses
-but also comes as ”elusive presence they cannot control”
-want JC just for filll of loaves (material gifts) or want Him bc He is God?
***You see, do we want/know/love this amazing God?? JC walks where only God can walk (only one who can only forgive sins or have power over nature)- [by incredibly entering our pain by dying the death on cross we should so we could have eternal life & live they life God wants]
***Clear lesson- Jesus clearly cares for his disciples
no rebuke, only patience, calm assurance, then delivers them safely to shore
A Savior who brings calm & deliverence
He will not forssake His ppl, & no power of man/nature can stop, & will surely come, though may be at 4th watch of night
II. Jesus cares.
-even in bad conditions, could cross Sea in 6-8 hours
Roman military divided night into 4 of 3 hours each from 6 pm – 6 am: 4th watch = 3 – 6 am (last darkest part of night)- JC came when disciples most exhausted after 9 hours, in deepest despair & just before daylight break,
Sails down, Disciples straining at oars but despite strenuous rowing going farther away, 3.5 miles out (CAPERNUM 6 Miles away), peter yelling orders, icy water for 9 hrs with no progress—- ALL for obeying this prophet jesus (hardened hearts)
-ironically, if disobeyed, they would have been fed by crowd & been hosted with warm bed to tell stories about their miracle-working prophet jesus
“why did he pull us away only to give us impossible task? Doesn’t he care?”
-disciples face adversity, feel separated from JC & distressed in rowing, rowing but no progress, discouragement, that can’t see JC power/care- but even when we don’t see JC, He sees us.
— “And he saw…” (v. 48) = jc focused on disciples, as followers of Christ in the storms are special objects of his all knowing compassion & care
*And Jesus really did walk on water!
-the very waves that overwhelmed disciples were simply a path for his feet- that’s how great his power! That’s how much He not only sees but enters our struggle by becoming so familiar & intimately acquainted to touch our pain
*JC so deliberately CARING, testing, 2 cor 16:9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him, to cultivate faith!
49] but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
“cried out” = cried up – screamed, perhaps about to jump over boat in terror
Once again, disciples misunderstand, shrieking in terror & mistaking JC for ghost in their familiar Sea territory/workplace of fisherman
Why? Who did they NOT think it was? -never crossed mind this might be JC, forgot Him
*do we forget him? or reject Him when he comes to help us bc we don’t believe he will or can help us or cares
immediately “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
B4 in Mark 4, He calmed storm, now appears in middle of storm
who do u think created or allowed storms?, created/used this storm to build faith? by passing by…
III. Recognize Jesus during the storms of life
Tho JC made them do it this time, Each time disciples separated from JC in Mark, they get into trouble
-ONLY when JC gets into boat that storm stop
Being with Jesus has good consequences of peace & ultimate safety
Separation from JC brings disciples to trouble (caused by jc to teach that His presence overcomes storms in their lives)
-we as disciples have to be willing to stay & let Him get into our boat
WHY “loaves?: they don’t understand about the loaves. What should they have understood?
what didn’t they understand & what connection with walking on water
blind to presence of God & His care for men…to full glory of revelation of God in face of Christ
when JC prayed God’s blessing b4 breaking 5 loaves to God applies also to himself
That Jesus can provide; that we are to come to him when we are asked to care for people beyond our own resources.
[when you give, even when it seems pointless, God will provide for you; offer what little you have in order to care for others; don’t be afraid of being cheated, ulterior motives]
But diff between disciples & pharisees is not hostile (though equally blind)
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
-JC sends disciples to Bethsaida but land in Gennesaret (opp direction)
unable to go to Bethsaida, blown off course, couldn’t understand re loaves
CONTRAST: Gennesaret’s faith in JC great power v. disciple’s lack of faith in JC little or no power
“hardened”- b4 pharisees, now disciples- mark reminds faith is not result of knowing or being w/JC, nor automatic but a personal choice, often having to be made in midst of trouble
-greater danger to discipleship is not external dangers but internal hardness of heart & lack of faith
BEWARE: HOW TO AVOID HAVING HARDENED HEART: (APPS):.
1. Learn that Jesus is our rest
– sabbath that many never take time to recharge w/study, prayer & rest but whirlwind of activity like disciples- physically weary & spiritually dry (rowing furiously v. wind but getting nowhere & blind to God who calls out & says “I am”), -in order to weather storms, you must build foundation b4 storms
no fb/ws makes happier & gives back 28 hrs/mo- 99 days/hours/min fast?
but (no rest away/apart from God)- ie. carmelo
– but why i learned relish teaching bs/sermons bc forced sabbath (but i’m just like disciples who in God’s mercy allows to distribute loaves/fish even though I didn’t want to serve them)
2. Focus on Jesus over our problems (ie. thumb)
sitting here defeated or scared,
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me.” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:28–31) Most importantly, Matthew tells us that they worshiped: “And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God’” (Matthew 14:32, 33). They ascribed to him his proper title. Their lives moved toward deeper commitment (Matt focus on optomistic).
CONTRAST w/Mark realist -disturbing to see disciples response in this miracle who don’t recognize jc & more frightened by his presence than his absence.
-he comes with all God’s power to control mighty wind & sea & tries to care for them by showing himself but instead it frightens/confuses them… is that true for us? Maybe only clear in retrospect that in our most frightened times, we were in very presence of God & Christ revealed His glory to us but we were too blind & frightened to see it.
So we should be alert in times of greatest discouragement/fears that are the times God may allow for us to experience Him best, passing by, showing his love & power as he leads us across troubled waters.
-ARe you Focus on storms or JC?
-worried about provision? But you forget He is giver of life! (shown you over & over!)
A. Mabel’s medicare, family inheritance, car gift, check from ring, new client,
B. debt just bc fear what ppl think, eat dandelions
C. no college, no job, bar, trial
open your eyes~!
peace when probs can be even worse! wake up in cold sweat/fear
3. Be patient with others as He is patient with us
A. Ask how does this affect how we treat others?, (JC so patient!)
do we Believe He is so Patient: (2x waves, 2x 5000/4000 (or, disciples think it was about food? mark 8:17,)
-so silly BUT we like disciples are slow to learn & forgetful,
Ie. So proud of raya poo ball on floor
GRACE- JC never gives up on disciples in spite of their failures, does not require disciples to grasp things immediately, not condemned for their hardheartedness nor inability to understand which will not fully come until after crucifiction & resurrection….do we treat others like that?
ie. 1st gen immigrant churches- we so quick to dismiss people.
B. Consider how does this affect how we serve in church?
[How are we tempted, like the disciples, to view others as an detriment in our receiving rest or deeper relationship with God (when actually serving in dependence on God is precisely what helps us grow deeper rel w/God & thus true rest)?]
[Instead, after great miracle/success, they stopped ASKING, stopped CARING, then stopped HAVING FAITH (split hardens heart bet what they know & what they do- you either learn more or you care less).
-hardness: we are either slaves to God or sin… no in between. If you’re coasting, you’re going downhill
-promised rest & difficulty trusting God for it- instead try to demand for themselves
JC trying to teach on shepherding but hearts hardened- were not able to understand that JC can provide, that we are to come to him when we are asked to care for ppl beyond our own resources, hearts hardened so they don’t recognize JC servanthood & soon lose ability to recognize JC at all
see pattern of downward spiral of disciples
*they missed out on rest by just reluctantly serving instead of joining the party (became outsiders like prodigal son)]
-disciples face adversity, feel separated from JC & distressed in rowing (like church ministry), rowing but no progress, discouragement or so involved that can’t see JC power/care
JC dn take disciples out of sea but enables them to keep going, like revelation churches he promises victory if faithful
ie. I’m so bashful re sharing faith with my employees for fear of imposing
*In beginning of ch. 6, disciples were sent out on 1st mission in total dependence on JC & that risky experiment by JC worked as they found JC promises true but then their hearts hardened when want to send ppl away & did not see JC was God & had given them his authority – have power to be like HIm- could they have fed the 5000?, calmed the sea if they believed this authority? Do you realize the power you have?
CONC– church is like the 12 in boat, wide eyed in storms of life & uncertain seas of life
why spend so much time on church stuff? because this is His bride, it is worth it, invest in what lasts forever
Will you commit yourself to following Him when the inevitable storms come? will you believe He is truly God almighty who cares for you? Fix eyes on jesus not your problems
